Google operating system news

September 17th, 2009

Google is launching the Google Chrome operating system as an open source, free for download, lightweight solution to users who use their PCs primarily for internet browsing. The operating system will initially be targeted towards netbooks, and if it is blessed with good reception, then it will be ported to PC platform as well.

Google blog has already announced that they are aiming for the internet surfers as the users of this new operating system. Sundar Pichai, VP of Product Management and Linus Upson, the Engineering Director have already made a post on the blog, stating that, “We designed Google Chrome for people who live on the web — searching for information, checking email, catching up on the news, shopping or just staying in touch with friends. However, the operating systems that browsers run on were designed in an era where there was no web. So today, we’re announcing a new project that’s a natural extension of Google Chrome — the Google Chrome Operating System. It’s our attempt to re-think what operating systems should be.”

Google has claimed that the new operating system will be fast, lightweight, and will have all the extra features that internet browsers do not need trimmed out of it. According to the developer team, the operating system is capable of starting up and getting the user connected to the internet in just a few seconds. The user interface will be minimal, in order to optimize memory and CPU usage. The better part of the operating system will only be visible once the user connects to the internet, according to Google. The developers have also claimed that with the release of this operating system, they are looking towards a world without viruses, malware and spyware. They are making the operating system so secure that it will never require a security update.

The Chrome operating system supports every x86 and ARM chip that is available today. Google is reportedly working with multiple OEMs in order to release a number of netbooks to the consumer market by next year.

The core of the Google Chrome OS will be based on a Linux kernel. All types of web-based applications will be launched and run automatically, while developers will also be free to create their own web-based applications without worrying about different OS platforms not supporting their apps. With Chrome OS, these drawbacks will probably not plague developers any more, or so the developers at Google believe.

Google has thanked the open source community that has reportedly supported the launch of this new operating system with great enthusiasm. Whether Google can carve a niche in the competitive field of operating system vendors, that only time will tell.
