Causes and effects of registry problems
The registry of a computer system can be described as its central nervous system. It is no wonder therefore that the registry is very critical if the Windows operating system is to function the proper way. The registry can further be described as the computer’s central area for filing all of the vital settings and preference files for both hardware and software. Unknown to many people, windows regularly reads the computer’s registry as the PC is being put to use. Thus, the ease and speed that Windows will use to read the registry has a direct impact on the overall performance of the system.
Since the registry keeps much information, there is bound to be much trouble and there are different causes for the problems. The biggest cause of problems in the registry has to be the removing of software applications and the applications leaving behind remnants in the registry and one the hard disk as well. While leaving the remnants behind, the registry can sometimes also leave adware or spyware that make other entries in the registry. When a software application is installed, some entries are made within the registry concerning file short cuts, locations, system files of associated programs and locations. If the programs are removed the many entries that are made within the registry are not always dealt with and this leads to the registry getting bigger and errors to be created in Windows.
Another cause of problems in the registry is the frequent updating of hardware. Hardware updates usually result in system settings updates. The latter could lead to registry entries that are redundant and in effect increase the size of the registry and lead to decreased speed of PC/system performance. Installing of freewares as well as other programs that have shared DLLs can leave traces of useless files behind in the registry leading to its corruption.
Among the problems that could plague the computer system if it has a faulty registry are crashing, slow boot up and freezing. Another problem that could arise when a registry is having problems in Windows is when a longer time is taken when looking for data that it has been instructed to find. This usually causes people’s computers to seem like they are hanging when the user double clicks on a particular program icon. If a registry experiences problems, it can difficult to get missing or old information. To prevent the programs in the registry from piling up it is recommended that users clean the registry regularly to detect and remove any unnecessary clutter.
