Windows device driver information for Agere Win Modem

The release of the current version 8.30 saw Lucent Win Modem change its name to Agere Win Modem. With Agere Win Modem, the modems firmware can be easily updated without having to flash it. Because of the name change, all software and dial up networking connectoids using the previous name (Lucient) should be updated for the device to function optimally. The updated driver includes WDM; these drivers are supported in windows 98SE, 2000, Me, and XP. Windows 98 and Me support .VXD drivers. Lucent Chipsets are winmodems and use software drivers that can allow the computers CPU, to perform the work that modems usually does on their own. The advantage of Lucent Chipsets over others is that not much power is used for processing. The modems are able to function well with V90 once the drivers have been updated.

The current generic driver is able to support modems, which are based on the LT chipsets and windows operating systems. When installing the lucent win modem drivers, it is recommended for users to extract the driver file LTMODEM.VXD, replacing it with the updated version in the system folder. The main advantage that Agere Win Modems have over other modems is that the firmware for all the modems are similar no matter who the seller is. Whether the modems are from IBM, Compaq, Sony, Hewlett-Packard the firmware remains the same. In most modems, upgrading the firmware may destroy the programmable ROM chips, however with LT win Modems there are no damages experienced. Users who want to upgrade the driver should first remove old files related to the LT modem. This can be done using ltremove.exe. However if there are difficulties updating the driver users should run ltremove.exe, and then reboot the computer. Windows will then be able to install the default driver. It is highly recommended you run a free registry scan for and Agere Win Modem errors before installing any driver updates.
