How to Make Computer Wallpaper

Level of difficulty: Intermediate

Desktop wallpapers were designed to enhance the appearance of the user’s computer according to the distinctive taste of the user. After some time though, users get bored with having the same wallpaper and would want to modify it again. Given today’s technology, users are enabled to download photos from the Internet, use their own photos, or create their own design using editing software like the Adobe Photoshop.

Materials Needed:
- Picture of your choice
- computer
- editing software such as Adobe Photoshop
Step 1
Users may begin by opening the Adobe Photoshop and creating a new page. The page is set as RGB, transparent, and 72dpi in the dialogue box 'New' file. Set the dimensions with the size 5 X 5' in order to make the screen easy to work on.
Step 2
Use many layers as it is necessary to create the base design or artwork that you want to repeat in the pattern of your desktop. For instance, a black background could be utilized in the creation of a monogram utilizing the letter 'P.' The design depends on anything that you like. Just make certain that it is capable of being repeated.
Step 3
What follows is the merging of the layers of the design. This is done by selecting all the used layers in making the design. Select 'Layers> Merge Layers' from the main menu of Photoshop. Do not include the background layer when merging the layers together. This way, you can make later modifications to the background layer as desired.
Step 4
Once you have decided on the definition of your design’s pattern type, employ the rectangle tool in order to make an illustration of a box around the design including the preferred border space amount. At this time, the layer of your merged design would have been highlighted in the window Layers. As soon as you feel satisfied with the selection that you have made, click on the 'Edit> Define Pattern' button in the main menu of Photoshop. When prompted, provide a name for your design pattern in the dialogue box and then click 'OK'.
Step 5
With selected attributes based on your preferences, create a set of sample repetitive pattern. Begin by turning off what your design layer originally is in order to make it invisible when testing your desired pattern. Then, select 'Layer> New Fill Layer> Pattern' from Photoshop’s main menu. When the dialog box 'Pattern Fill' appears, there is a sample of pattern selection on the left side of the box. Click on the arrow located right next to the sample and then choose your preferred design form the given options. Your chosen design must appear as a repeating pattern in the document. Percentage adjustment is done by sliding the arrow until such time that you get your desired size and look for your pattern. Click 'OK'. The Sharpen filter may also be applied on the new pattern layer if it appears hazy because of the scaling done.
Step 6
So as not to show any partial designs, crop the patterned image. Simply utilize the rectangle tool when selecting the area, then click on 'Image> Crop'. Maintain the same size of spacing around the cropped image’s edges so that when it is duplicated, it has a symmetrical pattern. The new repetitive pattern is then saved as a JPG file.
Step 7
Lastly, search for the system preference settings of the computer which govern the desktop wallpaper. If you are using Mac, choose the 'System Preferences> Desktop and Screen Saver'. Each time your settings are on a particular Operating System, you are enabled to select a new image pattern as the selected image for the wallpaper. Then, choose the way your selected pattern is displayed on the screen. In the OSX, select 'Tile' from the menu. The customized wallpaper can now be viewed in a repeated pattern on the desktop wallpaper.
