Windows has a default feature to hide the extension of internet shortcut (.url) files. With this setting you can revert the action by showing the extension of the file. If you have a file for example work, you can show the extension that it looks like work.url. For this, go to start > run menu, enter regedit and navigate to the registry path listed below. Now, delete the string value nevershowext under internetshortcut key. This shows the extension for the file. However, to hide the extension of .url files back, create the string value nevershowext and leave the data blank. The changes take effect after a restart or logoff.
