Windows show normally .bmp files with the default generic icon, but you can specify that windows should use special icons of .bmp files. This setting will display a miniature of bitmap image instead of the default icon. Important: if you apply this setting using ie 5 with activedesktop installed it may crash down windows explorer. For this, go to start > run menu, enter regedit and navigate to the registry path listed below. Now, right-click and modify the data of default string value to %1 which can show special icons for .bmp files. However, if you want to revert to default icons look, change the value data to shimgvw.dll,1. The changes take effect after a restart or logoff. Note: this setting can reduce the performance of your system and if an image has no icon in itself, windows will display the file with the generic icon.
