This setting lets you disable the installation of a program (with .msi extension) from the removable media like CD-ROM, floppy or DVD.
Level: Recommended For Experts Only
Description:
The users and administrators, per-user system policy being set to 1 and running a maintenance installation of one product, are prevented from using the browse dialog to browse media sources, such as cd-rom, for the sources of other installable products, even with elevated privileges. It is still possible for the user to reinstall the product from media if the user has a correctly labeled media source. Installations using windows installer version 1.1 should be secured by using the disablemedia and disablebrowse policies. Note: difference between disablemedia and disablemedia - 1. Browsing of media sources is disabled, when disablemedia system policy is set with windows installer version 1.1 or later. 2. Installations must be secured by using the disablemedia and disablebrowse policies, while using windows installer version 1.1. 3. Setting the disablemedia property, it prevents the installer from registering any valid media source like cd-rom. 4. If browsing is enabled, a user may browse to a media source. For this, go to start > run menu, enter regedit and navigate to the registry path listed below. If the subkey \windows\installer is not present, create it as explained below. Then, create an dword value name disablemedia,if this value does not exist. Now, right-click and modify the value data box with 1. Click ok and close the registry editor. Restart the computer. When editing the registry it is highly recommended to run a quick scan for optimization, you can test your system now for free.
