Description: Microsoft has designed a hybrid drive that is currently supported only in vista. This drive uses a non-volatile (nv) cache to achieve faster boot and resume. A portion of most commonly used data is copied onto the nv cache which in turn minimizes dependency on the hard drive. Eventually, this speeds up performance of your system. At times if data is frequently written into the nv cache, your system may run out of nv cache memory and cause the hard disk to power down. Frequent power shut-ups can increase wear and tear of nv cache. To avoid writing files frequently on nv cache, apply this registry setting. For this, go to start > run menu, enter regedit and navigate to the registry path listed below. If the subkey \nvcache does not exist, create it as explained below. Then, create a dword value enablesolidstatemode in the right panel, and change its data value to 0. However, to turn off hard disk solid state, delete the subkey nvcache. The changes take effect after a restart or logoff.
