Blu-ray - Term
Description
What is: Blu-ray
Description:
A new optical disc standard based on the using a blue laser rather than the red laser of most DVD players. The standard, developed by many corporations, including Hitachi, LG, Matsushita (Panasonic), Pioneer, Philips, Samsung, Sharp, Sony, and Thomson, could make the current technology in DVD players obsolete. New Blu-ray players might include both red and blue lasers in order to read all CD and DVD formats. The new standard could also replace the technology in writable DVDs. The blue laser can write much more data in the same 12 centimeter space. Blu-ray has enough storage capacity to make a copy of most hard drives on a single disc. The first products will have a 27 gigabyte (GB) single-sided capacity, 50 GB on dual-layer discs. Blue-ray is also fast enough for high quality video recording.
