FICON (Fiber Connection) - Term Description

What is: FICON (Fiber Connection)

Description:
IBM’s fiber optic channel technology first introduced in 1998 that extends its previous fiber optic channel standard, ESCON. However, FICON supports full duplex data transfers and allows greater throughput rates over longer distances than ESCON. FICON uses a mapping layer technique based on technology developed for Fibre Channel and multiplexing technology. FICON permits small data transfers to be transmitted at the same time as larger ones.
