Fibre Channel - Term
Description
What is: Fibre Channel
Description:
Fibre Channel is a technology for transmitting data between computer devices at data rates of up to 1 or 2 Gbps (and 10 Gbps in the near future). Fibre Channel can connect computer servers to shared storage devices or storage controllers and drives. Because Fibre Channel is three times faster than most data transmission technology, it is more efficient than the Small Computer System Interface (SCSI) for transmitting data between servers and clustered storage devices. Using Fibre Channel and optical fiber, devices can be up to ten kilometers apart. Fibre Channel also works with coaxial cable and ordinary telephone twisted pair. Fibre Channel offers point-to-point, switched, and loop interfaces and can operate with SCSI, the Internet Protocol (IP) and other protocols. Standards for Fibre Channel are specified by the Fibre Channel Physical and Signalling standard and the ANSI X3.230-1994, also known as ISO 14165-1.
