IP (Internet protocol) - Term Description

What is: IP (Internet protocol)

Description:
Specifies the format of packets and the addressing scheme. IP works like the postal system. It allows you to address data and place it in the system. However, with only IP, you have no direct link to the recipient. The IP protocol usually works with the transport control protocol (TCP), a higher level protocol that creates a connection between a destination and a source. The TCP/IP protocol allows you to send data back and forth between two hosts for a period of time.
