NAS (network-attached storage) - Term Description

What is: NAS (network-attached storage)

Description:
A server that shares files. The server usually consists of hard disk storage, such as multi-disk RAID systems, that has its own IP network address rather than being attached to a main computer that serves applications or other computing processes to end users. This allows all resources to run faster. The NAS device is usually part of an Ethernet local area network. Network-attached storage can be part of a storage area network (SAN). NAS software can usually handle a number of different network protocols.
