S-AIT (Sony Advanced Intelligent Tape) - Term Description

What is: S-AIT (Sony Advanced Intelligent Tape)

Description:
A data storage technology platform based on Sony's Advanced Intelligent Tape recording format. S-AIT is based on high-density helical-scan technology using Advanced Metal Evaporated (AME) media in a single-reel, half-inch cartridge design. The first generation product is expected to yield one-half terabyte of capacity in a single-reel, half-inch tape cartridge, with an expected roadmap capability up to four terabytes. Unlike most tape technology where less than half of the recording layer is magnetic material, the evaporated metal recording layer of AME tape consists almost completely of magnetic material. This allows a greater recording density and storage capacity per cartridge and provides a smoother tape surface, leading to a longer head life without the need for cleaning.
