SATA (Serial Advanced Technology Attachment or SATA) - Term
Description
What is: SATA (Serial Advanced Technology Attachment or SATA)
Description:
A new standard for connecting hard drives to computer systems. SATA is based on serial signaling technology, unlike current IDE (Integrated Drive Electronics) hard drives that use parallel signaling. SATA cables are more flexible and smaller than the ribbon cables required for conventional PATA hard drives. SATA cables can be much longer than PATA ribbon cables. SATA requires fewer conductors, only 7 in SATA as compared with 40 in PATA. As a result, electromagnetic interference (EMI) is less of a problem. The SATA signal voltage of 250 mV is much lower than the 5V required for PATA as well.
