buffer - Term Description

What is: buffer

Description:
A temporary data storage area that compensates for a difference in data transfer rates. The purpose of a buffer is to hold data temporarily, such as in the RAM, so the computer can manipulate the data before storing it. Because the processes of reading and writing data to a disk are relatively slow, many programs keep track of data changes in a buffer and then copy the buffer to a storage device, such as the hard drive.
