MS Backup Versus
WinBackup
Windows comes with a built-in backup program
called MS Backup. While MS Backup includes the basic features
needed to run backups of important files and folders, some of
the most important features such as built-in compression and
CD burning are missing and, although MS Backup can be used to
backup your emails and Internet Favorites, it is often rather
difficult to locate those files.
Backing Up User Data with WinBackup
Unlike MS Backup, WinBackup allows users to easily back up Outlook
Express emails, address books, My Documents, Internet Favorites
and other user files by simply selecting those items from the
user data shortcuts. WinBackup can also backup your system settings,
which can be very useful when you have accidentally modified
an important setting or installed a new program.
Built-in Compression
When running large backups to a network drive or a CD, efficient
compression is very important because it can speed up backups
operations considerably, while reducing the amount of space
needed to store your backups. Unlike MS Backup, WinBackup comes
with built-in compression that can often reduce the size of
your backups by 50% or more. This makes it possible to store
large amounts of data on CD or DVD and, with WinBackup's automatic
CD/DVD spanning feature, storing very large backups is easy.
Backup Security
Today many users prefer to store their backups on shared servers
or even in online folders using ftp. While this is a very practical
solution because you can easily access your files from any location,
online or shared storage is also much less secure because all
your files might have to be transmitted across public networks.
The best way to ensure that no one else is reading your files
is to use some form of encryption. If you are using MS Backup,
this would require external encryption software, which would
make the backup process rather complicated. WinBackup comes
with built-in 256- or 128-bit encryption, ensuring that your
backups can safely be stored at any location.
