Creating Secure
Online Backups
Today, many PC users are storing files on the
Internet by using some free online storage service. While these
online locations can easily be used to store backups as well,
you should be very careful when sending sensitive documents
and emails across the Internet. Since bandwidth and storage
space is often limited, you should also consider compressing
the data before sending it to a remote server.
Encryption
When transmitting private information across public networks
like the Internet, some kind of encryption is absolutely critical.
Because the Internet consists of millions of computers connected
together by an incredible amount of wire, satellite and radio
connections, you have no way of knowing who will be listening
to your data streams as they are transmitted across the network.
The only way to ensure that no one will be able to access your
data is to encrypt the data stream before it leaves your computer.
Sometimes this is done by your browser using secure connections;
but, to ensure that the data is always encrypted, you should
encrypt the files yourself. WinBackup allows you to encrypt
backups using up to 256-bit AES encryption, making it virtually
impossible for anyone to access the contents of your online
backups. Since encryption is performed on-the-fly, backup operations
will be performed quickly and easily even when strong encryption
is used. To create an online backup using WinBackup, you simply
select an appropriate security level and start the backup. The
result will be a single compressed and encrypted file that can
safely be transmitted to your online backup location.
Compression
When sending backups across the Internet to an online location,
compression is often necessary to reduce the size of the backup
file. Since online storage is often limited, compression will
also allow you to backup more data without running out of storage
space. WinBackup features a full multi-threaded encryption and
compression engine that encrypts and compresses your files in
parallel for maximum performance. Backups can often be reduced
by 50 % or more using efficient compression, and some text documents
and emails might be reduced by up to 90 %. This will allow you
to transfer large backups even over a relatively slow modem
connection and will allow most users to create online backups
quickly and easily.
