Cleaning Autostart Registry Entries

Most Windows users are used to the fact that after installing a large number of software applications, their computer usually slows down considerably. One of the main reasons for this problem is that many applications install background processes that are automatically started when you start your computer. Those background processes increase the boot time and consume valuable resources. Some of the background processes may show up in your traybar as small icons, while others are completely invisible. Not all background processes are bad, of course. Some, like anti-virus programs and system utilities, are needed to keep your system running smoothly; but many of the background processes are often not necessary at all and only make your system run slower.

Removing Unnecessary Autostart Programs
Removing Autostarted programs can be a little more complicated than you might expect. Some autostarted programs can simply be removed from the Start menu -> Autostart folder, but most programs are started from various locations in the Windows registry. Since there are a number of different locations for autostart registry entries, and because the exact locations depend on your Windows version, it is usually difficult to find and remove autostart programs manually using regedit. By using WinTasks 5 Professional, however, you can easily remove autostart entries from any part of the registry with a few clicks. This screenshot from WinTasks 5 Professional shows all autostart registry entries.

Monitoring Autostart Programs
WinTasks automatically searches the registry for new autostart entries and displays a list including all autostarted programs. Since this list is updated in real time, you can even watch new entries being added or removed as you install or uninstall different programs. Using WinTasks you can also add or remove autostart entries or temporarily disable them to investigate the effect on your system. WinTasks also includes many other features to help you optimize your system, including real-time CPU and memory usage per process, detailed CPU and memory statistics, DLL usage, descriptions, and detailed information on all running processes.
