Windows device driver information for Alcatel Speed touch USB ADSL PPP

ADSL (Asymmetrical digital subscriber line) is DSL technologys most deployed form. The technology is used in the transmission of digital information using high bandwidth on phone lines to businesses and homes. The Alcatel SpeedTouch USB ADSL PPP is among the very few modems that come with Linux drivers and are non-ethernet. The modem is widely used in Europe, which is the manufacturers home turf. For the above modem to work the user will basically have to meet three requirements; the management utility and Modem firmware from Alcatel, Modem driver of Linux as well as related configuration and PPP daemon and kernel that is properly configured. The driver of this modem itself is known to be open source. Currently, there are two different unrelated drivers that are available. A USB supported kernel is an obvious requirement. ATM and USB support are better is current kernels. Users should use recent kernels if they are not using current distribution for Linux.

Outdated Drivers?

Unless you update your drivers regularly you may face hardware performance issues.

To check your drivers you should manually verify every device on your system for driver updates

Concerning patching and kernels, if one uses the supplied kernel source with a distribution belonging to Linux it is likely patched heavily already and applying patches can be a miss or hit. Two different driver projects exist for the Alcatel Speed touch USB ADSL PPP modem and they both have different configuration and installation processes. They do not have similar code bases as well. One similarity of the two drivers however, that is difficult to ignore is that they are both GPL and open source. The first module solution is from Johan Verrempt although Alcatel originally developed it. The latters installation is the most difficult of the two and often requires patching. However, it may come have more performance benefits as it runs on kernel space. The other available driver is from Benoit Papillaut and friends and it does not have a very complicated installation. Patching therefore is not necessary when one uses this extension. It is highly recommended you run a free registry scan for and Alcatel Speed touch USB ADSL PPP errors before installing any driver updates.
