The CTX Serial Wave Device is a communication hardware component which supports the recording and playing back of audio signals over a conventional telephone line. This is an added functionality over the data and fax feature sets of most modem devices. The device driver for this hardware component allows for the implementation of voice and speakerphone feature sets of the hardware. Essentially when these functionalities are activated by the device driver the CTX Serial Wave Device becomes compliant to the Telephony Application Programming Interface standard of the underlying operating system platform. This also translates to the development of third party applications that can tap into the functionality of the communication device. The compliance of this communication hardware component to the operating system protocol means that its device drivers activate both voice and sound functionalities. The voice modem feature set is normally interfaced with the universal modem driver while the wave or audio device functionality is normally built into the device by the provider.
Unless you update your drivers regularly you may face hardware performance issues.
To check your drivers you should manually verify every device on your system for driver updates
Normally using the correct device driver for the CTX Serial Wave Device would create an entry for the Wave Device for Voice Modem or Unimodem Half-Duplex Audio Device in the Device Manager applet depending on the version of the operating system platform. This is another classic example on the importance of using the manufacturer supplied device driver. Using a generic device driver may prevent the activation of the previously stated entries in the Device Manager applet. The CTX Serial Wave Device may still function as a modem and allow the host computer system to log into remote network environments with the corresponding authentications codes. However, the feature to record and playback telephone conversations will not be available. This means that instead of identifying the attached hardware component as a data, voice, and fax capable modem, the operating system environment will only recognize it as a data modem. It is highly recommended you run a free registry scan for and CTX Serial Wave Device errors before installing any driver updates.
