This device is capable of supporting up to two IDE channels (primary and secondary) with two devices per channel for a total of four devices. It is a compatibility device that has a well defined programming interface at a fixed address and it uses fixed IRQs. It contains a code that allows the maintenance of compatibility of the programming model. It allows other devices to maintain the same register level programming interface while addressing the register at non standard locations and using non standard IRQs. It helps avoid resources conflict and thus allowing multiple controllers of the same type to be in a system. The channels are independent and thus do not affect each others operation. The control registers for each channel to follow the AT attachment interface standard. It consists of eight input output ports that provide various status commands.
Unless you update your drivers regularly you may face hardware performance issues.
To check your drivers you should manually verify every device on your system for driver updates
The control block register consists of two bytes. The second byte is read only and has interesting quirks where the top bit of this byte is shared with the floppy controller. The class code in the controller configuration space is used by software to determine and control the mode that the device is operating in. the specifications are Rev 2.1 compliant.
