TrueCrypt software allows you to create and maintain an on-the fly encrypted drive. On-the-fly encryption is when data are automatically encrypted and decrypted before they are saved or loaded. Without the correct password and key, no data on encrypted volumes can be read or decrypted. TrueCrypt volumes are nothing more than random numbers until they are decrypted. The entire file system is encrypted, including file names, folder names and contents.

This software is highly recommended to secure data on laptops.

TrueCrypt can perform the following tasks

Creates a virtual encrypted disk within a file and mounts it as a real disk.Encrypts an entire partition or storage device such as USB flash drive or hard drive.Encrypts a partition or drive where Windows is installed (pre-boot authentication).Encryption is automatic, real-time (on-the-fly) and transparent.Provides two levels of plausible deniability, in case an adversary forces you to reveal the password: 1) Hidden volume (steganography) and hidden operating system. 2) No TrueCrypt volume is identifiable (volumes cannot distinguish from random data). Encryption algorithms are: AES256, Serpent and Twofish. Mode of operation:

Please Note: TrueCrypt's author claims that it is not secure as it could have unfixed security issues. Therefore, TrueCrypt should only be downloaded if you are migrating encrypted data to TrueCrypt.

TrueCrypt development was stopped in 5/2014. You should migrate any TrueCrypt data to encrypted disks or virtual images that are supported by your platform.
