Free file manager for PCs

WinSCP allows you to transfer files between local and remote computers. WinSCP supports Amazon S3, SFTP and SCP file transfer protocols. The software can transfer large files.

Additional file transfer apps include Bitvise, CyberDuck and FileZilla. All of the apps allow you to securely send documents between local and remote servers. FileZilla is one of the most downloaded programs. All tools except Bitvise, SecureFX, are open-source. All utilities can be used on Microsoft Windows PC devices.

What is WinSCP used for?

WinSCP allows you to send files between two networks. It also lets you move multiple files at once. WinSCP can also be used to share entire directories and allow you to download and upload content. The in-app text editor allows you to quickly rename entities.

WinSCP's graphical user interface is easy to use. When you launch WinSCP, a login window opens. Next, you will need your server information. You can modify the server data for each session. A dropdown menu allows you to choose the file protocol. SFTP is the default protocol.

You can choose from WebDAV, SCP or SFTP protocols. Each file protocol has its own port number. When you change the protocol type, the port number will automatically populate. Each protocol has a port number. However, you can change the port number by simply typing the number. You can easily increase or decrease it using the arrows.

The hostname box is located beside the port number. The hostname section can be used with an IP Address. WinSCP requires a username and password. Some servers require more security. If your server uses public and private key authentication, you can click on the "Advanced" button to enter the information.

You can enter your private key file in the "Authentication" tab of the "Advanced Site Settings" section. Remote directories are required by certain systems. You can add your local and remote directory data to the 'Directories" area of the advanced settings. WinSCP offers many settings that you can explore.

What are WinSCP, PuTTY and?

WinSCP is a FTP client that is specifically designed for secure file transfers. PuTTY, an SSH client, is used primarily to interact with your server. WinSCP has a graphical user interface. PuTTY, however, is a command-line interface. WinSCP allows you to choose between the commander or explorer interfaces.

The commander interface is divided into 4 main sections. The user interface will show your local computer on the left. The remote server to which you are connected will be displayed on the right. The upper portion of your screen displays the menu and tool bars. The bottom of the UI contains a transfer queue.

The queue is normally only visible during file transfer. You can hide or show the panes. By hovering over line segments, you can resize sections until an arrow appears. Each side has an iconbar. You can access different drive letters by using the dropdown menu located above the remote and local computers.

You can open your drive letters by clicking on the folder tree button at end of the list. You can move up a directory using both the remote and local servers by clicking on the dots in the lists. Double-clicking an icon will allow you to enter a directory.

The GUI

You can perform common operations in many ways with the interactive user interface. Items will be uploaded to the remote server from your local computer. When files are shared from your remote device to your local computer, they are downloaded. You can right-click on one file, multiple files or entire directories to click the 'Upload’ and 'Download' buttons.

You will also find the 'Upload and 'Download' buttons above each pane. Drag and drop the selections to one side of the screen. When the transfer is complete, the items will be visible on both sides.

Essential file sharing tool

WinSCP allows you to sync your directory with Windows. This allows you to exchange files and folders. It is safe to use for file management. It is open-source under the GNU General Public License. You can access the free SFTP client in many languages, including English, Bengali, Italian, and Spanish. Access is made easy for everyone.
