A compression utility for Windows

WinZip is a file manager that lets you zip, protect, manage and share files in one place. This tool allows you to access files quickly and connects to OneDrive, Google Drive and DropBox.

More than unzipping and zipping

WinZip is the go-to zip tool. It can convert PDFs, add watermarks, manage archives, protect files, and integrate with cloud services. It was released in 1991 and is still one of the most popular file compression programs. It is one of the most trusted methods to work with zip files. It offers many features and is simple to use.

It's still relevant and can be relied upon, having recently crossed the billion download mark. Even though the interface is simple and functional, it's still modern.

WinZip is more than just a tool to zip and unzip files. It supports many other archive file formats that can be found online. It supports ZIP, TAW, CAB and RAR as well as 7z, LZH and ARJ. You can even add government-level encryption for documents protection.

Interface

WinZip's main interface is similar to Microsoft Office programs. It has a ribbon control bar that is easy to use. It's sleek and modern, but you can also revert back to the traditional WinZip interface. You can even customize the program with themes.

You can use the first option in the control bar, Create, to encrypt, resize, add a watermark and convert to PDF. A button will appear for your cloud options, which allows you create zips from Dropbox, Google Drive or Microsoft OneDrive online storage.

You'll find quick-access buttons at the top of the app's screen that allow you to create a zip file, open an existing one, and send it to an online storage service. You can save files as zip or archive files and email them. You can view all context menus, or just the WinZip commands.

Cloud integration

As long as you are logged in, it is easy to create zip files from files stored in cloud accounts. WinZip will download the files and allow you to focus on zip creation within the program. After you are done, a message box will appear telling you how much space has been saved by compression.

It's just as easy to upload a zip to cloud accounts and then upload them to social media accounts. It can be uploaded to Facebook, Twitter, or both simultaneously. WinZip's cloud storage will store your files and you will receive a link to share them. Your followers will be redirected to zipshare.com if they click the link from one of your pages.

ZipSend allows you to send files, but you will need to create an account online. If you have a free account, you can send 50 MB. ZipSend pro allows you to send up 2GB.

WinZip tools

You'll find a variety useful functions under the 'Tools" menu choice. You can create multi-part zip files, self-extracting ones and password encryption. You can also view the test results' last output messages with some tools. You can also add comments and diagnostics. Usually, the diagnostic and the last output tools will display the same dialogue.

WinZip can encrypt compressed files and archives up to 256-bit AES. This is the same level as the U.S. government uses to protect highly confidential information. You can also resize files and add watermarks to protect your digital property. Converting Office files to PDF is also easy.

The Performance Scan is another useful feature. This scan will identify any temporary and unneeded files. It will also identify potential registry problems. Unfortunately, clicking 'Fix' will prompt you to purchase the company’s system cleaner software.

Issues

There is no faster way to zip large media files than this. A 1 GB project with a 97% compression speed should take only one minute. This is in comparison to the built-in Windows zip that can take up to 30 minutes to complete the same job.

Some users have reported receiving error messages while testing. This is often when you drag and drop large files at once. Sending a MyZip mail can also cause an error message. WinZip's Knowledge Base has an extensive and up-to-date help section.

Alternatives

WinZip is one of the oldest programs in its field. However, it is up against WinRAR 32-bit and 7-Zip 64-bit. The latest WinZip version is the most feature-packed, yet simple to use archive utility. It is faster than other archiving utilities, more comprehensive, and has the best security features.

Many operating systems today already have built-in tools to extract ZIP files. WinZip is faster than any of its competitors, thanks to the tools already available on your computer. It also provides unparalleled encryption and cloud integration. No other compression utility is as productivity-enhancing and easy-to-use.

The fastest zip tool

Although it may seem like WinZip was around since the dawning of computing, it isn't obsolete. This tool is easy to use and very fast. It is quick and secure to zip and unzip files quickly, archive files, and add encryption. The latest version includes state-of-the art conversion and a new intuitive tool for photo compression.

You join over a billion users when you download this software. Despite increased competition, WinZip is still the best compression and archiving software. You can try the trial version for 45 days to see if it is faster and more secure.
