An X Window server for Microsoft Windows

Xming is a Windows operating system X11 display server. This free piece of software is safe if you use SSH and an enhanced Plink SSH client. The software is lightweight, well-featured, and easy to install. It is standalone native Windows and can be made portable by not requiring any machine-specific installation or access to a Windows registry. Its interface is very similar to Remote Desktop Connection Manager.

Xming can also be used with SSH implementations, which allows you secure forward X11 sessions to other computers. It supports PuTTY's plink.exe and ssh.exe. SmartGaGa is not required to use Xming on Microsoft Windows.

How do I connect with xming?

Double-click the icon to install Xming on your Windows device. Next, open the PuTTY session configuration windows. In the window for PuTTY configuration select "Connection--> SSH--> X11.".

Make sure that the "Enable X11 Forwarding" checkbox has been checked. Next, you will return to the Session section and enter an IP address or hostname. Finally, you will create a name suitable for your session within the "Saved Sessions" section. The session is saved.

Is Xming secure?

Your keyboard and mouse events, as well as your clipboard and screenshots, may be exposed. You should be more concerned about server security than the client.

It is a popular choice for its simplicity.

This display server software is very popular because of its simplicity in design and implementation. It supports multiple languages and has OpenGL, Mesa 3D and GLX 3D graphics extensions capabilities.

It is less configurable that Cygwin/X despite being based upon Cygwin/X the X.Org Server. It stands alongside the other free giants in this field and is well-respected for being new-user friendly, without dumbing down for the casual crowd.
