How to Install Memory in Computer

Level of difficulty: Intermediate

A memory is more popularly known as RAM or Random Access Memory. The memory of a computer simply refers to the physical memory of the system, which is utilized by the processor to store programs and data. A computer usually tends to slow down as soon as its warranty expires and one effective way to speed up and rejuvenate the PCs performance is to upgrade its memory, the RAM.

Materials Needed:
- RAM
- computer
Step 1
Be sure to turn off the computer. You may leave all other peripheral devices and cables connected as it will not affect the memory installation process. Just make sure that the power cable is disconnected before proceeding.
Step 2
Open the computer case to access the motherboard where your RAM will be placed. Once the casing is open, take some time to get rid of the dust before locating the slot where the memory will be mounted.
Step 3
Locate the existing RAM on the motherboard and look for the extra slots usually situated beside the existing RAM. You can choose to retain your existing RAM and simply insert the new RAM properly on the empty slot.
Step 4
Take out the new RAM from its anti-static bag and hold it properly, taking into consideration all safety measures. One has to remove static before actually holding the memory chip. To remove static, one can ground himself by simply touching the metal section of the PC case.
Step 5
Locate the memory to be removed. Push the locks found on both sides of the slot containing the memory module to gently lift it out. Place the memory module on the static bag and take necessary measures to avoid touching the pins found on the bottom edge or base of the memory.
Step 6
To install the new RAM/memory module, carefully remove the memory module from its anti-static package and also secure the pins on its base, making sure that the pins are safe from any damages.
Step 7
Locate the available memory slot on the motherboard and secure the pins found on the base of RAM. Align these pins with the corresponding ports over at the available memory slot.
Step 8
Slowly mount the bottom edge or base of the RAM or memory into the available memory slot.
Step 9
Carefully push down the memory from both ends of the module to position it along the available slot. Snap the locks of the slots back to secure the memory evenly against the module's upper corners. The module will be held in place by these latches at the end of both sides. To avoid damaging the chip, close the casing.
Step 10
Proceed to reconnecting any peripherals, cables or add-ons that may have been removed. Start up the computer to see if the additional memory is read properly.
